The National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) has planted a total of 1500 assorted fruit trees in 30 schools across the country. The NAPSA tree planting initiative is a deliberate move in line with the Authority ‘s corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the official launch of the Authority’s tree planting week at Northmead Primary School in Lusaka recently, NAPSA Director General Mr. Yollard Kachinda, in his speech read on his behalf by Mr. Cephas Sinyangwe NAPSA Head of Corporate Affairs, bemoaned the negative impact that climate change is causing on human life especially among poor communities.
Mr. Sinyangwe noted that concerted effort from all well-meaning stakeholders is needed for the climate change scourge to be addressed.
“NAPSA is glad to partner with Northmead Primary school and 29 other schools around the country to plant fruit trees, because we know that our intervention will go a long way in protecting our environment and promoting good nutrition,” he said.
Mr. Sinyangwe added that this will contribute to having a healthy and intelligent school community because of the nutritional value of the fruits.
And speaking at the same event, Acting Head Teacher Mrs. Fridah Kaonga thanked NAPSA for selecting Northmead Primary School as a beneficiary of the tree planting exercise.
“We understand the importance of planting trees as a community of Northmead Primary School and pledge to take care of this gift because in addition to providing us with good nutrition, it will also serve as a practical learning field for pupils taking environmental science classes,” said Mrs. Kaonga.
Meanwhile, the School Head boy Ian Mweene called upon other corporate organisations to emulate NAPSA in assisting with needs the school is grappling with.
Mr. Mweene further requested NAPSA to ensure that the orchard is secured in a wire fence and a water line be constructed to ensure constant water supply.
The tree planting exercise was conducted by the Authority during the month of November and December 2017 in partnership with the 30 schools across the country.
